X5 Group intends to automate 30% of work processes

There has been a shortage of staff at X5 for a long time, as in retail in general, writes “Kommersant”. Representatives of the Association of Retail Trade Companies consider the current state of labor in the industry to be a real crisis: “probably the worst in the last 20 years.”

The growth of X5’s business leads to a shortage of employees, even with about 392 thousand people employed in the networks. The staff still cannot cope with servicing a large number of trading floors.

The retailer intends to resolve the personnel issue through robotization. And for this, he plans to expand the practice of investing in technology. In 2023, according to Kommersant, X5 invested more than 12.5 billion rubles in innovation.

“Retailers have few options to solve the problem other than investing in workflow automation. Retailers are faced with the task of shifting the processes on the sales floor to the buyer as much as possible,” Kommersant quotes Olga Sumishevskaya, a market expert and partner of the consulting company One Story.

She emphasized that the situation with personnel will not change in the near future, so it is logical that other networks are working on digitalization and robotization. For example, Magnit intends to install 27 thousand new self-service cash registers by the end of the year.
