Xbox boss Phil Spencer has finally opened up about the company’s much-discussed handheld. Or rather, the lack thereof. Can the Nintendo Switch count on competition from Microsoft or will things remain quiet for the time being?
The Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Portal and the Steam Deck: Nintendo, Sony and Valve are all having success with their handheld consoles. Although Xbox has the power of Microsoft behind it, a handheld from that company is still a long way off. Something that is striking, especially given the focus on streaming and the ability to play games anywhere you want.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer told Bloomberg that he understands this all too well. The demand from gamers for an Xbox handheld is certainly not strange to him, and that is the reason that Microsoft is currently looking at the possibilities. But before the handheld can be launched, Xbox first has to fix some software issues.
Microsoft de console, Xbox de software
According to Phil Spencer, Microsoft is working on various prototypes of an Xbox handheld and is looking at ways to market them. Xbox itself is currently developing the software for such a device, but focuses mainly on the current Xbox app.
“The Xbox app is good, but not great,” says Spencer to Bloomberg. “It could certainly be better on a number of Remote Play devices.” It is clear that it will take some time before a handheld appears. “A long-term idea, but I love making devices,” he continues. “I think our team can be really innovative, but we have to stay informed, learn and see what’s happening.”
