Xiaomi (briefly) bigger than Apple

Smartphone maker Xiaomi sold in August more devices than Apple. Not that the company sold more smartphones than a year ago, but Apple saw a sharp decline in iPhone sales. As a result, Xiaomi ended up in second place in the world ranking of largest smartphone manufacturers in August.

According to the researcher, Xiaomi owes this growth to a new product strategy, with a single so-called hero model per price category, instead of a wide range of smartphones. That apparently created clarity among consumers.

Xiaomi is doing particularly well in the sub-$200 price category, such as the Redmi 13 series. Flagship models such as the Xiaomi 14 series are less popular. In Europe, the brand faces strong competition from Apple and Samsung, as well as the Chinese BBK, which includes OnePlus and OPPO.

Xiaomi is expected to relinquish its second position in the coming quarters now that Apple has launched the iPhone 16.
