You don’t make a lot of money by making and selling smartphones. This market is saturated and hardly yields anything anymore. Xiaomi is known as a producer of smartphones, but is now also focusing on producing electric cars.
Not everyone might have expected this, but the first car from the Chinese brand is doing quite well. The Xiaomi SU7 went into production at the end of 2023 and has been well received. In April we already wrote that there were long waiting times for this first car from Xiaomi.
More capacity
According to Xiaomi, we have already shipped 30,000 units of this tight SUV sold. The first sales target of 100,000 units is expected to be achieved in November of this year. One of the foundations of this success is the price. From 28,000 euros you can drive a car that looks a lot like a Porsche and with which you can show off when you are stuck in traffic on the Witte de With or Meent in Rotterdam.
Xiaomi has set aside $10 billion to become a major player in the electric car market. To do that, you have to be able to design something beautiful, but more importantly, you have to be able to make them.
Therefore, the company has bought a large piece of land near its own factory in Beijing. On this 53 hectares of land, a new factory will be built that will increase the current capacity. This new factory should be ready in 2025 and will have a minimum capacity of 150,000 cars per year.
