Xiaomi makes its own chip to order fewer units from Qualcomm and MediaTek

Small but important changes are being “cooked” by Xiaomi, since according to a recent report we learn that the Chinese manufacturer is developing its own new chipset. This move is coming as a response from Xiaomi that it wants to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Mass production of the chip will apparently begin next year, and the first phones powered by it will also be released in 2025.

After all, let’s not ignore that Chinese officials have not stopped asking local companies to reduce their dependence on foreign technology as much as possible, and Xiaomi seems to have received the message loud and clear. Of course, it remains to be seen how the chip will be positioned and in which part of the market it will be used. And of course, we’re curious to find out later how well this chipset will fare against competing offerings from other major semiconductor manufacturers.

Unfortunately, this report doesn’t tell us any of that, so we’ll have to wait for more details to be announced, either officially or through more rumors. Xiaomi plans to invest about CNY 30 billion ($4.1 billion) in R&D in 2025, up from CNY 24 billion ($3.3 billion) this year.
