The foldable smartphone landscape is constantly expanding and, at the moment, it features numerous alternatives to Samsung’s iconic Galaxy Z series. Among the most significant innovations are two foldables from Xiaomiincluding the book model Xiaomi Mix Fold 4which sets new standards for the category.
Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 It is the company’s fourth foldable device and stands out for be the thinnest and lightest to dateIt has a thickness of only 4.59mm when opened and 9.47mm when folded.
The Mi Fold 4 has the widest optical zoom ever seen on a foldable smartphone
Xiaomi ha greatly optimized the hinge designreducing its size without compromising its strength, and has integrated carbon fiber plates to lighten the structure compared to previous generations.
The curved edges of the screen, and the body, improve ergonomics and the handling of the device.
The company has also adopted the 3D stacking technology to use the internal space more effectively. Thanks to these optimizations, the Mix Fold 4 weighs only 226 gramsmaking it lighter than both the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
As for the displays, the Mix Fold 4 mounts a 7.98-inch internal flexible panel produced by Samsungwith a resolution of 2488 x 2244 and a dynamic refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz.
The external screen has a diagonal of 6.56 inches and a resolution of 2520 x 1080, with a refresh rate that can reach 120Hz, similar to that of the larger display. Both screens support Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for a high-end visual experience.
Another notable feature of the Xiaomi foldable is its advanced photographic department. A collaboration with photography equipment manufacturer Leica, the Mix Fold 4 features specialized lenses and color enhancements that improve image quality.
The quad-camera setup includes a 50-megapixel main sensor with Light Fusion 800 sensor and Leica Summilux lens, flanked by a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 50MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, mainly for portraits. There is also a periscope telephoto lens with 5X zoom for closer shots.
The improvement of portraits is achieved by a machine learning model trained with photographs taken by professionals, which produces images that are slightly more ideal than reality, but still faithful to the scene.
Inside, the processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powers the Mix Fold 4. In terms of memory, Xiaomi offers up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage space. The hardware is backed by a beefy 5100mAh battery, compatible with 67-watt wired and 50-watt wireless fast charging.
With these elements, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 positions itself as one of the most powerful and eye-catching foldables launched this year. However, like the previous three generations, the Fold 4 will also be available only in China, with a starting price of 8,999 yuan, about $1,240.
The top of the range version with 1TB of storage will be sold in China for 10,999 yuan, about $1,515. The phone is available in blue and white, as well as a special black composite fiber edition.
