Xiaomi will make its own mobile chips

Smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi plans to… proprietary mobile processors to develop. The company wants to reduce its dependence on chipmakers like Qualcomm and MediaTek for its mobile processor needs, just as Apple has done before.

Xiaomi is working on a custom 3nm chip that will launch in early 2025 with performance comparable to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship processor.

Developing mobile chips is a complex and expensive affair. Samsung has been doing it for more than ten years now with the Exynos line. However, there have still been complaints about performance issues on Exynos variants compared to Snapdragon variants of the same smartphone models.

Despite the risks, Xiaomi is working with well-known company ARM to help design its custom chips. The design phase for the first 3nm chip has recently been completed, with mass production expected in 2025.

The company plans to collaborate with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce these 3nm chips.
