XL clothing chain: Use of Wegovy is complicit in bankruptcy

Wegovy has helped to slim down many Danes, but the popular slimming agent has also slimmed the coffers of a number of stores that sell clothes in large XL sizes.

The clothing chain Nanna XL, which sells clothing in large sizes for women, has now gone bankrupt. This is stated by the clothing chain’s owner, Pernille Ibsen, to Avisen Danmark.

In particular, the clothing chain, which had seven stores across the country, has noticed that customers’ use of Wegovy has slowed down the sale of clothing in large sizes.

“When our customers slim down, they start buying their clothes elsewhere. With the wide distribution Wegovy has gained, it really means something to us”, says Pernille Toft Ibsen to Avisen Danmark.

In addition to Wegovy’s entry, factors such as corona, inflation and increased online shopping over recent years have challenged the clothing chain.

Nanna XL was established in 1997 as the first clothing chain with a focus on large sizes. When the chain was the largest, it had 15 stores across the country.

The clothing chain Nanna XL is not the only retailer of clothing in the plus size segment that has felt Wegovy’s influence since the weight loss product was approved in Denmark in December 2022.

The clothing expert’s store ‘Store Robert’ in Valby sells men’s clothing for ‘big people’, as stated on the store’s website.

‘Store Robert’ informs Ritzau that the store can notice a concrete change in the sizes sold to customers as a result of weight loss, among other things, with Wegovy.

The store has knowledge of regular customers who use Wegovy. This has resulted in the most sold sizes now dropping one or two XL sizes.

However, ‘Store Robert’ has not experienced a general falling sales figure as a result of Wegovy’s spread.
