Xpeng G6 test – (hit) shooting the Tesla Model Y

The Xpeng G6 makes no mistake about it: the Tesla Model Y is its major competitor. Can the Xpeng G6 make life difficult for this popular electric SUV?

In any case, with 800 volts, the Xpeng G6 can charge very quickly. Xpeng talks about 300 kilometers in ten minutes. And in less than 20 minutes you can charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent, with a charging power of up to 280 kW. That is more than the Model Y can do (250 kW). A heat pump is standard, but it also has its American example.

The EV specifications of the Xpeng G6 are perfectly fine. So is the space and comfort in the back seat. You might not expect that because of the sporty design with a sloping roofline. But the headroom is sufficient and the legroom more than sufficient. Coincidence or not, but the wheelbase at 2.89 meters is exactly the same as that of the Tesla Model Y. The backrest of the rear seat is adjustable, but this also applies to that of the Model Y.

It shouldn’t get any crazier, because the length is also the same as that of the Tesla (4.75 m). The latter does have considerably more luggage space, 854 versus 571 liters. Although we question the measurement method that Tesla uses, because at first glance the difference is not that big. The loading opening is wide and the tailgate can be operated electrically, but that is actually normal in this segment.

Like its great example, the Xpeng G6 has a large central display. Still, the 15-inch display is worth mentioning because the menu structure is clear and ease of use is high. We sometimes see this differently with other Chinese cars.

We are becoming happier and happier, because the Xpeng G6 has physical buttons on the steering wheel. For example, you can use this to control the volume of the 18 speakers (standard) or change the layout of the digital instruments. What we would also like to see from other brands are the large card compartments. A half-liter bottle fits in with ease.

Furthermore, while driving we were often reminded that we had to keep both hands on the wheel, even if we did that. It didn’t take long before we silenced all the warning signs.

Xpeng G6 test conclusion

All in all, the XPeng G6 does not make any major mistakes and it trumps the Tesla Model Y in certain areas. It drives quietly, quickly and comfortably, but so does the American EV. The Xpeng G6 is a good alternative and very interesting for those who do not want to follow the herd
