After Yamaha introduced the new Y-AMT (Yamaha Automatic Manual Transmission) last month, the Japanese company has decided that the MT-09 will be the first bike to get this feature.
Yamaha states that the basic specifications of the upcoming motorcycle with the new option will remain the same. The Y-AMT system allows the driver to change gears via buttons on the steering wheel, or to let the system automatically perform gear changes. The functions are similar to Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), except that the Y-AMT system does not have such a solution. Another similarity is the absence of a clutch and gear lever.
The speed change is controlled by two electric actuators. The system itself weighs 2.8 kg and is thin enough not to affect the width of the motorcycle.
The Y-AMT is not Yamaha’s first automatic transmission (apart from CVT scooters, of course), as the 2007 FJR1300A was equipped with YCC-S (Yamaha Chip Controlled Shift). The aforementioned system had an automatic hydraulic clutch, allowing the driver to change gears via the gear lever.
