Yandex to film Atomic Heart video game

The company acquired the rights to adapt the game from the game developer, Mundfish Studio. The parties did not disclose the details of the deal.

It is currently unknown what format the project will take — a full-length film or a series. The script for the adaptation is being written by Roman Kantor (The Master and Margarita, Silver Skates, and Epidemic).

Atomic Heart — a computer game in the genre of first-person shooter with elements of role-playing game, developed by the Russian studio Mundfish. The project was released on February 21, 2023.

The game takes place in the USSR in an alternative time, where the country produces robots that serve people. The machines stage a rebellion, which the main character must stop.

The screenwriter noted that the plot of the film adaptation will intersect with the original game and its characters, but some events will be developed in a new way. Filming of the project is scheduled for 2025, but details about the casting and the directing team have not yet been announced.

According to estimates by the owner of the portals “Kanobu” and “Igromania” Gadzhi Makhtiev, the cost of the deal to purchase the rights to the film adaptation could have been up to 100 million rubles. At the same time, he believes that the project has a good chance of success.

Editor-in-chief of the portal “Kino-teatr.ru” Zhan Prosyanov warned about the risks: the project must find a balance between observing the canons of the game and the opportunity to attract a new audience unfamiliar with the video game.

  • Atomic Heart is part of the portfolio of Russian developer and publisher Astrum Entertainment. The company was created as a result of the spin-off of part of the My.Games business. This happened after the new owner of My.Games, Alexander Chachava, restructured his gaming assets.
  • In March 2024, Tony Watkins, former president of Electronic Arts Russia, became the new CEO of the company. He also held senior positions at Kaspersky, ESLFaceIT Group, Lavazza Coffee, Dirol Cadbury and others.
  • The Russian computer game development market grew by 18% in 2023. The total revenue of the 50 largest Russian companies amounted to 45.4 billion rubles. Astrum Entertainment earned 10 billion rubles in a year.
