Judith, 26 years old, did not think twice and a few hours after the storm landed alone in Aldaya to help those affected by DANA. “It looks like the setting of a horror movie,” describes this young volunteer to They got up. Since Wednesday, he has been organizing groups of young people to collaborate on everything the neighbors need. They helped a sick sixty-year-old woman, who is alone because her family is away, clean her house. This grateful woman left him a message: “You are an angel fallen from heaven”.
This young woman from Moncofar travels every day to the affected areas to help the victims, who have practically lost everything due to the storm. The first day she went down alone. The next one got two boys from his village. The next two others. On Saturday to four people from Valencia. They are all between 22 and 26 years old and have a common denominator: they lend their shoulder to whatever is needed.
They are waiters, dentists, shop assistants, police officers… who work tirelessly among the mud that floods the streets devastated by DANA. They come and return during the day so as not to hinder the neighbors. “People can’t get an idea of what we are experiencing. If you see it in a photo or on TV it can impact you but nothing compared to when you see it in person. It is terrifying“, describe Judith.
These young people barely take out their cell phones for hours. They do not upload publications to social networks nor do they make videos of their work. “I only take it out to warn about what is needed,” explains this young woman who tirelessly remains in one of the areas most affected by DANA.
The stories of the DANA mud
When they arrive each morning in Aldaya they distribute the tasks. Some distribute food between houses, others stay on the streets and the last ask “house by house to see if people need help.” Last Sunday they experienced one of those exciting moments.
Judith was on the street with a friend when they ran into a neighbor who asked them for help. The two young men took the muddy furniture out of their house and then the young woman stayed all day cleaning the woman’s house. “The woman is 68 years old and suffers from fibromyalgia and she couldn’t do anything, and she was alone because her only son lives in Bilbao. “So I took it upon myself to clean his house,” describes this girl.
The woman surprised Judith with a nice thank you note for the services provided. A page torn from a notebook full of mud but with a great load of feelings. “You are a angel fallen from heaven. Thank you, God bless you and yours, Judith,” he wrote.
The mousetrap that the mud has created in Aldaya prevents the young woman from returning to the helper’s house. “Unfortunately I don’t have photos nor can I tell you the exact location because that is a massacre, you have no sense of direction or location,” he acknowledges. They got up.
“Cleaning tools are needed”
Added to these problems is the lack of a telephone line. “There is also no coverage and I prioritize helping rather than taking photos because you can see that I hardly upload anything about how the situation is,” he admits.
The fundamental need in DANA-affected areas is cleaning tools. “It is necessary shovels, buckets and machines to separate the water but unfortunately it is no longer up to us,” says the young woman who has also been asked for toys for the children.
This is one of the thousands of stories that have been found volunteers displaced to the areas. There are hundreds of people who want to bypass the restrictions to collaborate. The efforts of Judith and her friends will not stop in the coming days. They will continue each day traveling the kilometers that are necessary to participate in the necessary work in the towns that have been invaded by mud.
