On 1 November 2024, the tobacco tax will be reduced, which means that snuff will become cheaper and cigarettes will become more expensive. This is part of the new Swedish approach to damage minimization, something like News24 previously talked about with Swedish Match’s Nordic CEO Anette Rosengren.
– The reduced tax on snus combined with the increased tax on cigarettes makes it easier for existing smokers to leave cigarettes in favor of the smoke-free and less harmful alternative snus, she said at the time.
A snuff box will be 3 kroner cheaper on average.

The profession where the staff are not allowed to snuff
The year 2022 passed The Public Health Authority out with statistics that showed that almost 14 percent of all citizens snuffed daily. Among men the figure was 20 percent and among women the figure was 7.2 percent. If you are one of these, you may have to think extra carefully before choosing to work in detention.
On the same day that snus becomes cheaper, it will also be forbidden for certain staff at Stockholm’s detention center to bring snus with them. It is police officers and lawyers, two professions where you often meet and interrogate the inmates, who have to cut down on their snuffing.
Even relatives and voluntary organizations that visit the detention center are not allowed to bring any snuff box inside, something that Aftonbladet was the first to report on.

“There have been occasions when police officers handed snus to inmates”
– It applies to all forms of visit, that you may not bring extra snuff more than what is under your lip. And that applies to the security prisons in Huddinge, Kronoberg and Sollentuna, says Jonas Bennertcorrectional inspector, to the newspaper.
The reason is that snuff boxes are used for smuggling and that snuff can be used by inmates to gain benefits, the newspaper writes. Bennert believes that there have been several incidents linked to smuggling in the various detention facilities.
However, there is no particular staff group that is suspect, he tells the newspaper. At the same time, he points out that a group has given snus to inmates.
– There have been occasions when police officers have handed snus to inmates who absolutely should not have access to it.
As regards other staff at the detention center, no restrictions have been introduced.

Leif GW Persson has snorted for 61 years: “Hell”
Someone who is not happy with the decision is the criminologist Leif GW Persson.
He has been snus for 61 years and tells Aftonbladet that abstinence from snus can affect the work in the interrogation rooms.
– It must be hell for people. Snuts and plits, if we take the popular names, are the largest snus cones found in this country. You get stressed and disordered when you don’t get your snus, Persson adds the newspaper.
