Researchers at the University of Milan, Italy, had 10 participants climb stairs and exercise on a treadmill to learn about the energy required for various walks. The exercises were done at three speeds and lasted from 10 seconds to 4 minutes at a time.

During the exercise sessions, the researchers recorded how much oxygen the participants consumed and calculated their metabolic plateau for different walks. Metabolic stability is a state in which the heart rate is constant and the body’s energy production and consumption are balanced, and can be compared to a car running at cruising speed.

The study found that participants needed more energy to move and warm up at the start of each walk. Additionally, when walking or climbing stairs in 10-30 second intervals, the amount of oxygen, which indicates energy consumption, was 20-60% higher than when walking the same distance at once. This is because walking becomes more efficient after a few minutes of movement.
