You can now comment on Instagram Stories

Liking stories and reacting to them with emojis has been possible on Instagram for some time. Now the platform has rolled out a feature that allows users to comment on stories.

UPDATE

In Germany, too, users can now comment on their friends’ stories. Instagram recently displayed this with an overlay in the app. The comments are publicly visible to everyone. However, the function can be deactivated in the settings.

Users can now not only add a heart to Instagram Stories, but also comment on them. This is possible thanks to the new Hype Comments feature that Instagram is currently rolling out. The platform informs users about the launch of the new feature via notification, as social media expert Jonah Manzano shows on X.

As can be seen in the screenshot, Instagram explains that the so-called hype comments are visible to all users who watch the story. This distinguishes the feature from the “likes” in the story, which, unlike likes on posts and reels, remain private. On the other hand, Instagram distinguishes the feature from the story reactions, which end up in the direct messages and are therefore also only visible to the story creators. If you don’t want to receive hype comments, you can deactivate them in the settings at any time.

The Instagram Story in transition: visible for 7 days?

The platform was already working on the ability to add comments to stories in April 2023. The rollout that has now started should please many users. However, it may still take some time before the option to comment on stories reaches all users. The launch reflects Instagram’s goal of creating more space for connections and communication. Platform boss Adam Mosseri named this at the beginning of the year as one of the social group’s three main focuses for 2023.

For a long time, the story was Instagram’s feature with the fewest opportunities for social interaction; users could see who had viewed their story, but there were no options for communication – apart from private reactions. The ability to like Instagram stories, which the platform introduced for Valentine’s Day 2022, represented a turning point in this regard.

Since then, Instagram has introduced numerous other features that have changed the form and functionality of the story – including the ability to share complete reels in the story and new options for displaying stories in a diversified way. Recently, the platform also tested a feature that allows users to request story mentions. In addition, reels shared in stories on Instagram are now automatically displayed in full screen – but creators can still adjust the size. The new My Week feature is also likely to be particularly interesting for many users. With this, stories may soon be able to be displayed not just for one day, but for an entire week.
