You can now wear the running shoe emoji in real life

While most objects first exist physically and then are converted into a digital version, the shoe emoji turns it around. The digital shoe, originally designed by Apple, has now become a real product.

If you’ve ever wanted to let people know that you were running, but didn’t have the time or inclination to type it out in detail, you’ve probably used the following icon: . If you are reading this on an Android device or in a web browser, the emoji may look slightly different (in which case, see the image above). Anyway, artist Jose Wong decided to bring the famous emoji to life – as a real shoe. A striking detail is that the soles feature an image of the internal parts of an iPhone.

By the way, we can say what the emoji is and what the real shoe is, but it’s more fun to figure it out yourself.

Chicken or the egg?

Although we previously suggested that the digital shoe existed first, the design’s origins lie in the physical world. The emoji is based on the shoes that Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, often wore: the iconic New Balance 574.

While the original New Balance logo has been replaced with two stripes, the rest of the features have remained largely the same. The end result is therefore a tribute to both Steve Jobs and the classic design of the shoe brand.

No money back

The shoe is now for sale for a price of just over 200 euros, but the edition is probably limited. The seller also emphasizes that all purchases are final – refunds are excluded.

This makes the shoe very much a collector’s item, and it seems like most buyers won’t expect to wear these sneakers on a daily basis. But if you do decide to take it out on the street, be prepared to be asked: “Those shoes look so familiar, where are they from?” You have been warned.
