You can prove your eDocuments in other places. For example at the post office or in the bank

eDocuments, illustrative

About a year ago, i.e. at the beginning of 2024, the eDoklady application was launched for the public, which is used to store the electronic form of your ID card on a mobile phone. Right after launch, it was possible to prove yourself via eDoklady only at a few selected locations. Over the course of the year, however, their number grew rapidly, and now there are others where you can easily get by with a virtual citizen.

eDocuments work

The eDoklady application found its users relatively quickly and Czechs began to use it in large numbers. Around the middle of 2024, it was used by 400,000 users, and since July it has been possible to use this application to prove your identity to the police, both in the field and in offices. Currently, this is a legitimate way of proving identity with most domestic authorities.

Now they have been joined by other businesses, led by the post office, banks and schools. From the beginning of 2025, users can also use the eDoklady application with health insurance companies, notaries, executors and even at embassies, and it can also be used in elections. It is therefore evident that the scope of this project is constantly expanding and more and more companies are accepting eDocuments.

A project that succeeded

In the field of digitization, not everything is going well in the Czech Republic, but we can safely consider eDoklady a successful enterprise. As it informs Digital Czech Republicin its first year of existence, 577,363 users downloaded this application to their mobile phones, and it was also successful in the Project of the Year category at the Crystal Magnifier 2024, where eDocuments took a nice second place.

On January 1, 2025, this application entered its final phase, and by the end of 2024 alone, the number of registered public authorities (OVM) reached almost 3,518. If you use the eDoklady application with an uploaded ID card, you don’t have to think about whether you have physical documents with you and a big advantage of the application is that you can control what data you submit.

At the end of 2026, everything will be different

The Czech Republic is one of the first countries within the EU to introduce the possibility of proving identity on the spot via a mobile phone application. This is a kind of test before the introduction of the European digital identity wallet, which will replace eDocuments and will be valid throughout the EU. That should happen at the end of 2026.
