On Monday, Apple made available the first publicly accessible version of the iOS 18 beta, which gives an insight into the new functions of the software that will be released in the fall before the official launch of the services.
The main innovation of the new software, Apple Intelligence, cannot be tested yet, some of the promised functions, such as ChatGPT integration and improvements to Siri, are expected to appear only at the end of the year. The integration of AI brings new capabilities depending on the application, but the company mostly describes it as a kind of personal assistant, which, based on the information stored about the user, can bring up relevant results under various systems and apps – all of these will otherwise only be available on the two more expensive models of the iPhone 15 series.
The introduction of Apple’s AI in the European Union may even take until next year due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the European Union’s legal framework regulating digital markets, precisely because of the resulting “regulatory uncertainties”. In the future, the company will try to develop a solution in cooperation with the European Union, which will enable it to provide the functions without “sacrificing the security” of European users.

For the time being, the currently installable iOS 18 edition brings more changes to the user interface, including the new lock screen, home screen and control panel, and the appearance of Photos and Messages has also been updated. Although the new settings would not be much new for Android users, it took several years for Apple to deviate from the more rigid design and give iPhone users more settings to achieve the look they like.
Users can now place icons anywhere on the home screen (for example, adjust them to a background image), set app icons to dark mode or a uniform color. The Control Center offers several pages of new panels and settings. Users can replace the camera and flashlight shortcuts on the lock screen with other apps. Where the service is supported, iOS 18 users can send text messages via satellite connection, if Wi-Fi or mobile internet is not available, this does not affect us for the time being.
As for the functions: Apple has placed all password management functions in a new application, Passwords, and it is also possible to make transcripts based on voice calls or recordings (in English and a few other supported languages, Hungarian cannot be counted on later either).
The preliminary beta of iOS 18 can be downloaded to compatible devices within the framework of the Apple Beta Software Program, a detailed list of which available here, after which a software update must be performed on the device as usual.
