According to Reuters, Sony intends to acquire the parent company of the studio FromSoftware, to which we owe the Dark Souls trilogy and Elden Ring. If it becomes official, it would be a big blow for the Japanese firm.

What if Sony acquired FromSoftware? This is what reports Reuters in an article published on November 19, 2024. More concretely, the multinational could afford Kadokawa, the parent company of the studio behind the Dark Souls trilogy and the masterpiece Elden Ring. This conglomerate also has activities in the field of manga and book publishing.

Sony and Kadowaka have not confirmed the indiscretion of Reuters, which relies on two sources to support its comments. The two parties are currently in discussions, and a point of convergence could be found in the coming weeks. Kadowaka’s market capitalization is around $2.7 billion, a sum that could be lower than what Sony paid for Bungie (a little less than $4 billion).

Sony would strike a big blow by offering itself FromSoftware

Sony would obviously strike a huge blow by managing to add FromSoftware to its galaxy of studios capable of offering significant exclusives to its PlayStation ecosystem. We could, for example, imagine a sequence ofElden Ring which would first be only available on a PlayStation console (the PlayStation 6?) – before appearing on PC.

We thus recall that the first Elden Ring has sold more than 30 million copies, allowing FromSoftware to expand its audience and introduce its soulslike formula to as many people as possible. For Sony, this is know-how that should not be neglected, knowing that the two companies have already agreed to offer Bloodborne only on PS4. The potential acquisition should also revive rumors about a remastering, or even a remake.

In any case, the level of quality of the studio’s games could be even higher, with total optimization of the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 then the PlayStation 6 (as is the case for the remake of Demon’s Souls For example). Of course, it will be much less obvious to reach 30 million sales without availability on other platforms.

We will still remember that Sony has not always been happy with the studios it has bought. Bungie has experienced ups and downs and the future of the Destiny saga is not very bright, while the flop Concordwhich swallowed up millions of dollars, resulted in the closure of Firewalk Studios. Let’s hope for a better fate for FromSoftware if it joins the PlayStation fold.
