Similar to the exterior, the passenger compartment is basically based on angular shapes and definite lines, but the designers tried to create an open and relaxed atmosphere, so friendliness is a given here as well.
According to the manufacturer’s description, the Lexus Tazuna concept was used in the cab, in which Tazuna is a word that refers to the way the rider can control the horse with the slightest movement of the bridle. In the spirit of this, the controls and information sources have been placed in such a way that they can be used even with a small movement of the hand or the eye. So the car was built around the driver, and to perfect it, Lexus used the help of a professional rally driver.
The design of the interior is classic, so you can control the temperature or the hi-fi volume with real buttons, but so are the buttons on the steering wheel. Modes and four-wheel drive can also be controlled with switches.
The details of the air conditioning are already available from the giant 14-inch touch screen, they are always visible in a fixed band, so turning on the air conditioning, heating the seats, heating the steering wheel, and defogging the windshield can also be done with a single touch. The image of the map and the cameras on the on-board system is sharp, but the menu system, which also handles Android Auto and Apple CarPlay applications, taught us a lesson several times, as did the voice control.
The dashboard is definitely horizontal and the windows run relatively low, which gives a good all-round view. If that wasn’t enough, a 360-degree camera image can help, but the so-called Multi Terrain Monitor function is also available, which shows what’s under the car and to the side, which can come in handy on the road so that you don’t hit the bottom.
Basically, the information for the driver is displayed on the 12.3-inch screen, which information can be customized. In addition to the somewhat too simple, too futuristic image for me, a head-up display is also available, which projects the most important driving information above the hood.
The material quality is not that of a luxury car, but overall it is good. The center console, for example, is exceptionally beautiful, on which the dark-toned inlay brings out the atmosphere of natural wood well and gives a premium atmosphere with the satin-gloss metal inlays. The leather parts of the seats and dashboard are also pleasant to the touch.
Its steering wheel is the size of a passenger car, and its basic settings are also close to those. A good-grip, good-tactile element with tabs on it for controlling manual shifts. The height and depth of the steering wheel can be adjusted electrically.
Its front seats can be manually or electrically adjustable. Simplicity reminded me of them. We don’t have a lot of hocus pocus, but on several 3-4 hour trips they proved that they are comfortable while holding well in corners. They are also available with a two-tone cover, but for the first time in its history, this is also true for the entire passenger compartment in the GX.
The rear seats are no longer so prominent in the standard case, the seat of the second row is a bit like a bench and here not only its shape, but also its design. The height ratio of our hips and knees is not ideal. At the same time, the angle of inclination of the rear backrest can be adjusted, which improves comfort and there are no complaints about the spaciousness. And especially not in the front, the passengers sit far from each other.
There is a solution to the problems of the rear seat, as the Lexus GX can be ordered not only with a three-person, bench-like rear seat, but also with two separate seats. Thus, a passenger compartment with 5, 6 and 7 seats is also available. The latter two also have a third row of seats with two seats that can be folded out of the floor, which mainly provide a good place for children. In keeping with Lexus, the third-row seats can even be folded out by motors.
The seats in the second row can also be heated, while the front seats not only promise better comfort on cold days, but also offer ventilation for the heat, while fatigue can be alleviated with a massage.
Depending on the version, we can charge our devices through four or six USB ports, but a 12-volt connector and a traditional 120-volt outlet are also available. In addition, energy can be obtained between the front seats with a wireless charger.
The 2024 Lexus GX gets a 10-speaker surround sound system as standard equipment, and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson hi-fi can also be added for an extra charge.
There are plenty of storage compartments, and we can count up to 12 cup and bottle holders. The huge compartment under the elbow can even be cooled. My favorite, however, is the small shelf-like solution in front of the passenger’s seat, which is also shaped as a handrail, so the side of the seat is curved inward so that our fingers can run around it.
Theoretically, the luggage compartment is 292 liters behind the third row of seats, but this value is probably true up to the ceiling (smaller at first glance), as is the 1138 liters behind the second row of seats, and more than 2 cubic meters if only the front seats are folded up. It is certain that four people can pack it in the back for the holiday.
