This year, Google has significantly increased the prices of its Pixel 9 smartphones. The Pixel 9 Pro model costs almost USD 1,000, which translates into almost PLN 5,000 in Poland. Fortunately, it looks like it has plenty of headroom for price cuts.
There is no need to convince anyone that manufacturers of high-end smartphones sell them with a large margin. Just look at the financial reports of a company like Apple, which earns a fortune on iPhone smartphones. However, it turns out that Google does not intend to be left behind. According to estimates from a Japanese newspaper Nikkei costs of components needed for production The Pixel 9 Pro is only a little over $400.
Google makes a lot of money on the Pixel 9 Pro
The value of the components and the cost of putting them together is not the entire cost of the smartphone, but it gives some idea of how much the company can earn from it. It is known that Google also has to invest a lot in marketing and software, which also contributes to the price of the smartphone, but it seems that Pixel 9 is the goose that lays golden eggs. According to the Japanese estimates, in the case of the Pixel 9 Pro model, the cost of the Tensor G4 processor is approximately USD 80, the screen provided by Samsung costs USD 75, and another USD 61 must be paid for the set of cameras. These are the three most expensive components of the smartphone, which add up to $216. The rest, such as the casing, battery or RAM, costs another USD 190, making a total of USD 406. Interestingly, it’s 11% less than the cost of Pixel 8 Pro, which, however, has a larger battery and screen.
For comparison, the components needed for production The iPhone 16 Pro costs much more, at $568. This includes $135 for the Apple A18 Pro chip, $110 for the screen and $91 for camera components. These values pale in comparison to the amounts that Qualcomm wants for its latest Snapdragon 8 Elite system. According to unconfirmed reports, it may be as much as USD 200. So it looks like using Tensor G4 in Google smartphones may be a wise decision. I suspect that few people would be willing to pay more than $120 for a more powerful processor when the current chip performs quite well.
However, this does not change the fact that Google also has a lot of room for price reductions, which we have already seen. Pixel 9 Pro could already be purchased for less than PLN 4,000, i.e. 20% cheaper than the manufacturer’s suggested price.
