Azdren Llullaku (36 years old), the most famous Kosovar in Romania, a member of teams such as Gaz Metan, Poli Iași, Astra Giurgiu, Concordia Chiajna, Ceahlăul or Gloria Bistrița, explained in a recent interview why the players left his country the field for the game with Romania.
The Romania-Kosovo match, from the 5th stage of the League of Nations groups, was abandoned by the guests in the 90th + 4th minute, due to some pro-Serbian chants coming from the stands. Now, the Kosovars are waiting for UEFA’s verdict, which will most likely record a 0-3 defeat at the green table.
Azdren Llullaku explains why Kosovars can’t stand chants of “Serbia, Serbia”
Azdren Llullaku was born on February 15, 1988 in the city of Istog, in the west of the state of Kosovo, but he fled the country at an early age with his family because of the war.
Later, when he became a professional footballer, Llullaku chose to represent the Albanian national football team at international level, for which he made 6 appearances.
However, the talented midfielder is known to Romanians for his history in our country. Llullaku arrived in Romania for the first time in 2012, when he signed with Gaz Metan. He stayed at Mediaș for almost 4 years, before signing with Poli Iasi. He later moved to Astra Giurgiu, Concordia Chiajna and Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț, and is currently still in Romania, wearing the jersey of Gloria Bistrița, in League 3.
Questioned about the scandal that broke out on the National Arena during the match Romania – KosovoAzdren Llullaku recalled his origins and explained why his compatriots chose to leave the pitch to pro-Serbian chants:
You realize that we Kosovars have been through war. We have relatives who died in the war. I ran away from there, I saw everything. It’s a wound that hasn’t closed. He doesn’t look. It’s another recent wound. Believe me, when you hear the cry «Serbia! Serbia” is very, very painful. From what I heard Amir Rrahmani said, the whole stadium chanted «Serbia! Serbia!”. If there were four or five screaming it wasn’t a problem. But when a whole lawn is chanting it’s not OK. For us Kosovars, chanting «Serbia! Serbia!” it is very painful. You better swear at my mother, why do you want to. I give an example, so that it can be understood what we feel when chanting «Serbia! Serbia!”. If at a match with Palestine they shout “Israel! Israel!” how do you think the Palestinian players feel when they have thousands of dead children, bombed houses. I tell you it’s painful, because I went through something like that,” said Azdren Llullaku, quoted by Fans.
What he remembers about the escape from Kosovo
Next, the current footballer of Gloria Bistrita also said what memories he still has of the time when he fled from Kosovo, for fear of war:
Personally, when I fled the war, my house was burned. We were bombarded from behind, right and left, only to have one way, to run through the mountains, into Montenegro. You saw only disaster, burnt houses, dead people. They are deep wounds that hurt us very much. It’s very hard for some to understand, because luckily they didn’t go through the war,” added Llullaku.
In the 2016-2017 season, Azdren Llullaku scored 16 goals in 20 games played for Gaz Metan, becoming the top scorer in Ligue 1.
