Domestic. People under 30 have twice as much short-term absence from work as their older colleagues, according to the Occupational Health Report 2024. And they take sick leave twice as often as the 80s did when they were young.

At the same time, the number of young people who reported sick more than six times in a year has more than doubled in the past ten years.

According to the company Feelgood, which is behind the report, younger people often take sick leave for reasons other than illness.

– It could be that you have been up all night playing or breaking up with your partner, something that the older generation would not think you are home from work for, says Charlotte Valleskog, chief psychologist at Feelgood to SVT.

Today’s young people are much more picky about going to work than only slightly older Swedes were when they were young.

For example, the number of young people who report sick six times or more in a year has almost doubled since 2010, when the 80s were young.

According to labor law expert Tommy Iseskog, however, the same rules apply to today’s young people as they have always done.

– Illegal sick leave is a violation of the employment contract and ultimately you can be dismissed, he says SVT.

He also says that, in principle, employers can always require a medical certificate from day one, even though it is not directly stated in the legal text.
