Festival of science and technology AMAVET 2024 – results of the 27th year
On Monday, November 11, 2024, the Week of Science and Technology was opened at an event that already has a 27-year tradition – at the AMAVET 2024 Science and Technology Festival (FVAT). The national finals of the competition in professional creativity in science and technology take place in the form of poster (panel) presentations before members of the professional evaluation committee composed of scientists, university teachers and experts from practice. This exceptional competition is an invaluable opportunity for pupils from primary and secondary schools with an interest in science and technology to show their talent and creativity.
The AMAVET 2024 festival took place on November 11-12 in the premises of the Winter Riding School of Bratislava Castle. Simultaneously with the Week of Science and Technology in Slovakia, it was opened by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic Ján Hrinko. There was a traditional greeting from the president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences to his future “colleagues”. Pavle Šajgalikwho always looks forward to the competition of AMAVET, the best talented scientists of Slovakia! Speech of the Director General of the Center for Scientific and Technical Information Robert Gálik emphasized the importance of Science and Technology Week in Slovakia, the aim of which is to popularize science and present the work of scientists to the public, but also to arouse the interest of young people in the study of scientific and technical directions that help solve global problems and challenges. In this sense, he also appreciated the work of AMAVET in organizing FVAT.
The President of the Association for Youth, Science and Technology (AMAVET) Marián Giba thanked the partners of the event, without whom such an important competition for the future of Slovakia would not be possible! „I am very happy with the level of the 27th AMAVET Festival. The high quality of the projects was appreciated not only by the expert jury, but also by many guests and visitors. I am sure that the winners will represent us with dignity at the world’s most prestigious scientific competitions. The quality of the projects and the honest responsible work of their authors are at the same time a significant boost for us in a period when some do not realize or do not want to realize that all the progress and the achieved level of civilization of humanity is here thanks to scientific knowledge and respect for expertise.”
The Chairman of the Professional Evaluation Commission, Jozef Ristvej, particularly emphasized the cooperation with the members of the commission, who, despite their workload, found time for their followers: „The evaluation of the AMAVET 2024 Science and Technology Festival was again a big challenge for the Expert Evaluation Committee. The expert evaluation committee selected the winning projects based on approved project evaluation criteria, emphasizing the author’s creativity and project originality, the author’s scientific or technical intent, the author’s consistency and project completeness, the author’s abilities, skills, and understanding of the project.”
From the eight FVAT regional rounds, 63 projects, implemented by 86 authors, advanced to the national finals (one or two authors can work on 1 project). They competed in the categories of Biology, Medicine and Healthcare, Environmental Sciences, Electricity and Mechanics, Energy and Transport, Chemistry, Informatics and Computer Engineering and Social Sciences. Biology and chemistry were the most represented.
At the 27th edition, the Slovak Academy of Sciences was the general partner of the event. From 2023, together with AMAVET, it also organizes the Young Hope of Slovak Science event. Young authors will be able to present selected projects from this year’s AMAVET Festival and discuss them with SAV scientists from November 27 to 29, 2024 in the SAV Congress Center at Smolenicki Castle. In addition, they presented one of the most valuable prizes – advancement to the Regeneron ISEF 2025 competition in Columbus (OH) in the USA as the “Scientific Talent of the SAS” prize!
The 27th year of FVAT combined the most natural thing in human life – SCIENCE with ART! A young gifted artist, a creative violinist “addressed” his young colleagues, not gifted for science and technology, right at the beginning of the opening of the event. Filip Jančík decided on a combination of two contrasting songs: Pirates of the Caribbean in a special arrangement with Fujara and Slovak folk motifs and the second song Gladiator – Now we are free. He confirmed the fact that science is art and art is also science! It was also underlined by the performance of the trio from the Tolstoy Conservatory in Bratislava, which added variety to the ceremonial announcement of the results.
Information about the prizes – advancements to the world competitions – is attached to this press release in the Results List.
FVAT is the only entry gate in Slovakia for participation in the most prestigious world competitions of scientific works of high school youth ISEF (USA) and many others.
FVAT is the Slovak national round of the European Union competition for young scientists – EUCYS. The winners of the national competition are nominated for the EUCYS European finals. The EUCYS competition is announced by the Research and Innovation Directorate of the European Commission every year in October. The competition takes place at the level of national rounds in 40 member states and culminates the following year in September with the European final.
