Google announced in April that it would be stepping up its crackdown on third-party apps that offer ad-blocking features for YouTube. This measure is aimed at protecting the advertising revenue that both content creators and Google itself depend on.
According to Google, such third-party apps violate YouTube’s terms of service by blocking ads, which is a significant source of revenue for the platform. Google stresses that third-party developers are still allowed to use the YouTube API, provided the terms of service are followed.
YouTube tightens measures against ad blockers
In the past weeks and days, there have been more frequent user reports stating that videos on YouTube cannot be played. As one Reddit split screen recording shows, the clips jump straight to the end after starting and the affected people only see the last few seconds of the video. This phenomenon always occurs in connection with an activated ad blocker, explains 9to5Google.
Google uses various tactics to prevent ad blocker use, including slowing down video loading times and skipping videos. Some users also report no sound in YouTube videos when using an ad blocker, while others write that their videos freeze while loading.
YouTube Premium: The ad-free alternative
For users who want an ad-free experience on YouTube, the Premium subscription remains the only official option. In addition to being ad-free, this subscription also offers other benefits such as background playback and downloads for offline use.
