YouTube: Finally Text to Speech and Add Yours for Shorts

1. Convert video to short with the Auto Layout feature

Creators have been able to convert their long-form content into shorts since 2022. Now the feature is getting an upgrade: With the Auto Layout option, which will soon be available for Android, YouTube automatically detects the visual focus of the video and dynamically adjusts the crop and zoom for the short:

Soon, you’ll be able to use Auto layout on Android, which automatically tracks the main subject in your video as you’re turning it into a Short. That means when you’re remixing long form videos into Shorts, the Auto layout tool will automatically and dynamically pan, zoom, & crop to make sure your Shorts look great.

2. Add Yours Stickers – now also on YouTube

The next innovation is reminiscent of Instagram: With the so-called Add Yours sticker, viewers can add their own content on the same topic to a short. On Instagram, the Add Yours function has been available for stories since 2021, for reels since 2022, and for DMs for a few weeks now.

3. Auto captions become more colorful

Anyone who has subtitles automatically created on YouTube has previously had to make do with the font color and type specified by YouTube. That is now changing: in the future, creators will be able to set the font and color of the auto captions themselves, as can be seen in the following screenshot.

4. Text to Speech with 4 different voices

This update should please many creators: If they want to have text in their video read out loud, they no longer have to access third-party tools, but can use the new text to speech feature directly. The function offers four different voices to choose from and can be activated after entering the text using the “Add voice” icon in the top left corner. Many users are already familiar with text to speech content from TikTok or Instagram.

In the blog post, YouTube also refers to the launch of a feature that allows creators to create a remix of the remix – but this has been available since April 2024 and could now be rolled out to more users. The platform also addresses the question of whether shorts with a length of over 60 seconds are planned and answers this with a clear “maybe”.
