YouTube has been busy lately with all kinds of adjustments. The home page is now also in the spotlight. The streaming service is testing a new display of videos on the homepage, which should make it clearer. But users also see less important information about the videos shown.
On the new homepage that YouTube is testing, only the title and creator of the video are still visible, while the number of views and upload date are hidden. This is evident from a screenshot that the tech company vidIQ has shared.
The test seems limited for the time being. Most users won’t notice a difference on their YouTube homepage. It is not known how many people will be able to see the change. For people who see the change, the hidden data will become visible when they open a video.
It is not the first time that a streaming service has chosen to hide figures. Previously, Instagram and Netflix made similar adjustments to their platforms. YouTube has not yet explained why it is conducting this test.
Focus on content
A possible reason for the change is that YouTube wants to prevent popular videos from becoming even more popular simply because they have a lot of views. By removing this information, users can focus more on the content of the videos. Another possible reason is simply that YouTube wants to make the homepage clearer.
It’s not the only change on YouTube in recent months. For example, the mini-player was previously updated and the ‘skip commercials’ button was given a new place. It is not yet known whether the tested adjustment will be definitively implemented.
