YouTube Premium is being tested at half price, but with limitations

  • Google tested a lightweight version of YouTube Premium, but never fully launched the service
  • Registrations seem to have reopened, albeit in a few countries
  • The new Lite version no longer removes ads completely, but only partially

In 2021, Google tested a lightweight version of paid YouTube under the name YouTube Premium Lite in several European countries (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden). It cost 6.99 EUR per month and had no ads. Other benefits such as offline mode or background playback or YouTube Music were missing. But Google never started offering this variant globally and closed the testing. Now it looks like YouTube Premium Lite is getting a second chance.

Google confirmed serveru Android Authority“that tests”another version” YouTube Premium Lite in Australia, Germany and Thailand. Users in some countries were shown the option to register. The specific conditions are not known, but it is speculated that unlike the original version, this time the ads would not be completely eliminated, but only partially.

We are testing a different version of Premium Lite and some users in Australia, Germany and Thailand may see the option to register.

YouTube Premium Lite was popular among users because it eliminated the most annoying part of YouTube – ads – for almost half the price of a full subscription until Google canceled it in 2023. Now it appears that Google is testing in Australia two different versions of the Premium Lite plan.

In Australia, “Premium Lite” costs $11.99 per month, which is half the cost of the standard premium plan, which costs $22.99 per month. There also appears to be an $8.99 per month version available. Users also noticed in Germany that Lite is available for roughly half the price of the full plan, for €5.99/month (roughly CZK 150).

Would you get YouTube Premium Lite with limited ads?
