Until now, users have been able to leave full-screen mode by swiping horizontally or vertically when watching a long-form video – so the update would give the gesture a completely new function. It is unclear what the reaction of users will be. Many users are more selective about the content when watching longer videos, which require a larger time investment, than shorter formats such as shorts. They may therefore be less inclined to have content suggested to them – especially since it is unclear whether the algorithm actually meets individual tastes.
Longer stay thanks to passive use?
Nevertheless, the feature could encourage some users to be inspired when selecting content. Ultimately, this would probably result in a longer usage time – which is certainly desirable for YouTube, but in the long term could lead to more passive and less reflective use for users because they did not explicitly choose the content when swiping.
Currently only a limited number of Android users can use the swipe-up function; an official announcement from YouTube is still pending. It is still unclear whether a comprehensive roll-out will follow. To this end, YouTube recently introduced a feature elsewhere that is reminiscent of TikTok: Users can now search for content directly from the comments. In addition, the platform delights users with a variety of innovations, including longer shorts and a mini player.
