What started as a joke now takes a much more serious turn. MrBeast, the number one content creator on YouTube by number of subscribers (344 million), is considering buying TikTok.

“Okay, I’ll buy TikTok so it doesn’t get banned,” the 26-year-old American wrote on X on Tuesday.

His tongue-in-cheek tone disappeared in a second post, published a few hours later, in which he claimed that “a bunch of billionaires have contacted him since he tweeted this.”

“Let’s see if we can make it happen,” he wrote.

TikTok is to be banned in the US starting SundayJanuary 19, the deadline imposed by the United States for the Chinese social network to cut ties with its parent company, the giant ByteDance.

The House of Representatives passed a law in March that forces the owner of TikTok to sell it to American shareholders.

This campaign was motivated by national security stakes. The app, which has more than 170 million users in the United States, is subject to Chinese laws that require tech companies to contribute to the collection of classified information and allow Chinese authorities to access the data.
