(Seoul = Newsis) Reporter Lee Jae-hoon = The unbearable lightness of existence. In this world where only heavy sounds can be heard here and there, the preceding sentence takes on special meaning after meeting singer-songwriter Yun Machi (MRCH, Yoon Ji-young). This is because Yun Machi’s music is a good example that shows that just because it sounds light doesn’t mean it’s wasted effort, and that just because it sounds comfortable doesn’t mean it’s an easy writing method.

Machi Yoon, a former composer at Yonsei University and a strong musical fundamentals, is the most rapidly rising musician recently. It makes “as if” noises here and there.

In 2018, she gained recognition from the public for her appearance through the nickname ‘Yeondae Boa’ in Season 5 of Mnet’s ‘I Can See Your Voice’, but now her skills are ahead. Korea Creative Content Agency (Konjinwon)’s new musician discovery project ‘Muse On’, CJ Cultural Foundation’s indie support program ‘Tune Up 25th’ selected, Gyeonggi Creative Content Agency (Konjinwon)’s talented indie musician discovery project ‘2024 Indie Stance’ Top 5 was selected for a prominent indie support program.

It was selected as ‘Hyundai Card Curated 95’, which is famous for its eye for discovering good musicians, and is also ranked first in recruiting for various festivals, including Korea’s first large-scale J-pop festival ‘Wonder Rivet 2024’. In addition, he is receiving love calls from drama OSTs one after another, which is a symbol of popular singers. He sang the ‘Chaste Romance’ OST ‘Sales’ and the ‘Drunk Romance’ OST ‘Come with Me’.

Machi Yoon is also the most popular K-pop composer recently. He began his career as a composer through the Japanese song ‘Celebrate’ by the popular girl group ‘TWICE’. Afterwards, he received favorable reviews for his work on TWICE’s ‘Talk that Talk’ and NMIXX’s ‘MOVING ON’.

Like this, Yun Machi, who diligently moves between indie and major, singer-songwriter and songwriter, shows an interesting path that is rarely boring. The pinnacle of Yun Machi’s charm is her untethered innocence, the positivity of the world reflected in her transparent eyes, and the objectivity that makes her own charm shine even more.

No matter what anyone says, the only way to see the charm of Yunmachi is at the live scene. Machi Yoon, who will release a new EP ‘The Earth’ next month, will also hold a solo performance with the same title at Shinhan Card SOL Pay Square in Mapo-gu, Seoul on the 28th and 29th of that month. Both sessions have already sold out. In addition, a pop-up store will be opened in Mapo-gu, Seoul on the 23rd and 24th to commemorate the pre-release of ‘Human Mechanism’, a song included in ‘The Earth’. The following is a Q&A with Machi Yoon, whom we recently met in Songpa-gu, Seoul.

-This year marks the 5th anniversary of your debut, and you are really getting a lot of attention.

“This year was the year that gave me the opportunity to proudly write that I am a singer-songwriter in the occupation column. Before that, my identity was ambiguous. It was like writing ‘I am a singer’ in the occupation column just because I released an album. As a singer, I need fans. I thought it would be possible, but my goal was to make people recognize me as a singer-songwriter. Fortunately, it was I think it went well. It was a very proud year.”

-The fandom name is Drunken Dan, right? When did you start feeling like you were getting drunk?

“Honestly, it hasn’t really felt like it yet. I think we have to look at it calmly. But after the schedule is over, the crowd of fans waiting has gradually grown in size. In the past, there were two or three people, but these days there are more. In fact, I “I used to be an ‘observant’ person, but these days I feel happy that there are so many people who are interested in me.”

-On the 9th of last month, at ‘Hyundai Card Curated 95’ held at Hyundai Card Understage, the most popular musicians these days such as Hanroro and QWER, a Generation Z rocker (Hanroro) and a popular band (QWER) ) stood shoulder to shoulder with.

“First of all, the performance venue was very comfortable and nice. First of all, I was proud of being part of the lineup, so I was proud from the beginning to the end. There were a lot of Hanroro and QWER fans, so I had to do well, so I was extremely nervous.”

-Did you originally want to use classical music as a basis?

“Actually, I wanted to do practical music since I was young. I listened to my parents and went to university. Especially, I originally wanted to do musicals. I liked being on stage, so I thought, ‘I should dance and sing,’ so I wanted to do musicals, but it was difficult. “I didn’t know where to start.”

– Although it is not explicitly revealed in the song, since you are a person who learned classical writing techniques, you can feel classical elements here and there. Above all, the songs themselves are not easily made.

“Thank you so much. It’s the best compliment.”

-There are many great classical music graduates from the Yonsei University Composition Department, including conductor Kim Eun-seon, the first female music director of the San Francisco Opera (SFO). However, Korean popular music, including K-pop, boasts a status equal to that of classical music around the world. Since you originally said you wanted to do practical music, did you have the idea that you wanted to do what you wanted in your own way as someone with a classical music background?

“I had so many good friends. When I looked at them, I thought, ‘What am I?’ I thought everything would work out if I went to college, but I overlooked the fact that I had to study even after going to college. Instead, I have a lot of memories made in the musical club.”

-How did you come to release your first album ‘Let’s March!’ in 2019?

“After appearing on ‘You Can See Me’, I received a love call from the company. I thought I needed to have my own album before joining the company. I prepared it in 3 months and released it in a hurry. At the time, it was difficult because it was my first time composing (popular music). “This is my first album that I think I did very well, despite the pain it took to release it.”

-Machi always had independence.

“I think that’s my strength. I’m not progressive in everything, but when I make important decisions, I still think, ‘I did a good job with integrity.’ Haha.”

-I think that’s also evident on stage.

“That’s my dream. When I think of senior Jaurim Kim Yuna, she is so beautiful and cool. I want to become a cool person like that.”

-The EP ‘Oh, Life’ released in October of last year proved that we are heading down that path. The songs on this EP, including ‘Surrender’, became very popular online.

“I think thanks to that EP, I started touring at festivals and festivals. Not long ago, a thought suddenly occurred to me. ‘After all, singers should release albums.’”

-How was the song ‘Surrender’ created?

“When I write a song, I put it out right away. I don’t keep track of my inventory. But Surrender was the only song that I put aside for a year because it didn’t have a chorus. I’m an ENFP, but the lyrics to ‘Surrender’ are really about me, so I really wanted to put them out. The melody didn’t come out when it was all written. I played the original version of the chorus to him and he said, “It’s not that good,” so I couldn’t fix it. “I’m saying ‘I’m thankful’. It’s relatively simple now, but at first it was a little more melodic, so I think the chorus fits much better now that ‘Surrender’ contains the message of being simple.”

-It is impressive that you have a strong point of view but are also flexible in accepting what is said.

“I actually thought that caring about other people’s opinions was a huge disadvantage as an artist. In the beginning, it was a job where I had to show my own style, but I tended to be influenced by other people’s opinions too much. But the more fans I gained, the more I could express my own style. I think I was also finding it. I was swayed because I didn’t know that there were people who liked me as I am, but when I saw people who liked me for who I was, I gained confidence and became a little less swayed. “

-If the momentum is this high, I think I will continue to receive love calls from my new agency.

“I also thought a lot about the company. I thought I could be happy working with like-minded people. So I formed a crew. It’s a kind of label. The name of the label is The Only Scent. The title of the song, “The Only Scent,” makes me feel proud because I have new friends. I feel comfortable and have a lot of responsibility as an adult. It looks like it.”

-I think the reason Mr. March is able to start a label like this is because he also does songwriting. Because I work on a lot of songs for JYP groups, some people think I might be affiliated with JYP Publishing.

“I am not affiliated with JYP. I got to work with JYP artists through a relationship with writer Lee Woo-min (collapsedone) (a composer belonging to JYP Publishing), and he is like a mentor to me. This writer invited me to feature in his personal album, so we met. I was originally a fan of this writer, but I thought, ‘Why did you call me?’ I found out later that I had something in common with this writer’s favorite voice and singing style. “Would you say it has a Halsey-like voice with a bit of a tinkling sound?”

-It was not luck that led to this relationship, but skill.

“I learned a lot about the mindset about composing from this writer. When I compose, I actually have everything. I think it’s a matter of how to bring out this expression, but he taught me a lot about how to bring out that. ‘Wisdom of composition’ Thanks to these things, my work has become a lot faster. Of course, it makes sense to think about it more, but worrying about it doesn’t mean you can produce a 100% masterpiece.” Yun Machi The new song ‘Human Mechanism’, released on the 21st, was co-composed and arranged by Yoon Machi and Lee Woo-min, and Yun Machi added lyrics.)

-There are not many young female musicians who both sing and write as singer-songwriters. In particular, there are not many people who can go back and forth between the indie scene and the major scene like Mr. March. I think Seonwoo-jeong and Sumin would be examples. I think Mr. March can carry on that lineage.

“If I go that way, I think I can live very happily.”

-This year is truly a turning point, but what is your biggest concern as a musician right now?

“First, I thought, ‘Why am I such an omnivore?’ Now it’s up to me to turn that into an advantage.”

-Can you tell us about the new EP that will be released next month?

“It’s difficult for me to write down the genre when releasing an album. I’m confused about what genre my songs are. So this time, when I sing, I decided, ‘I should only compose songs with attractive facial expressions.’ I saw myself singing on stage. I think that’s my selling point. I think that I have to be a performance-oriented singer to be competitive and that’s why I’m so good at singing. Looks comfortable I think people liked it because I looked so happy, so I thought I should only include songs that convey my comfort in my facial expressions and gestures, so people would find it attractive when they watch the performance together.”

-Machi: Another advantage I think is self-objectification. But honestly, self-objectification is not easy. While studying classical music, I must have faced many challenges and had concerns about my identity as a musician. I also went through various audition programs and although I did well, I think the process must have been really difficult.

“Actually, when I first met writer Lee Woo-min, I thought, ‘I should become a composer.’ Then I thought, ‘Whether it makes me a living or a living, I just want to perform once.’ As I was entering my late 20s, I had a lot of worries. So, I held a concert, and it was my first solo performance in March of last year, and it was a pretty big place, and I was a bit confident that I could do it as a singer-songwriter. I heard that, so it felt like it was my debut. That’s why I chose songs that seemed attractive to me when performing this album, so it’s true that I was passionate about being in a band when I was a child. I liked Day, Muse, and Paramore. I also listened to a lot of K-pop from Girls’ Generation and Wonder Girls, and thanks to that, I started to think more complexly about what kind of song I could perform attractively on stage. cast When I do it, what kind of feeling will I be attractive when I do it?’ “I often think about it and choose projects like an actor.”

-Lastly, March, what kind of musician do you want to be?

“I like things that are not complicated. I just like things that are easy and I am a person who thinks ‘good things are good’. When I look at my friends at work, I often see them having a hard time. So, I want to be completely entertainment. I am people’s entertainment. Of course, I worried about whether I should include philosophy or whether I should write a profound message, but I just wanted people to see me without thinking when they see me. “I’d like you to come.”

-I don’t think there is any philosophy as wonderful as that.

“That’s right. I always yearned for something heavy… but not anymore. I thought that since everyone is already living so heavily, I don’t need to be heavy either. Haha.”
