The VPRO Supervisory Board has appointed Zakia Guernina as General Director of the VPRO as of September 1, 2024.
Guernina succeeds Lennart van der Meulen, who had to resign due to illness. Roel Burgman, who has acted as general manager since March last year, has been appointed business manager. Guernina and Burgman together form the new two-headed management of the VPRO.
Zakia Guernina is transferring from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences where she is acting general director. In addition to this position, Guernina is a member of the Top Sector Creative Industries at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate. Guernina is an experienced manager in the social domain with extensive knowledge and experience in managing innovation and complex organizations. She was previously a member of the board of the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and held additional positions at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, BNNVARA, Vluchtelingenwerk and Hogeschool Utrecht, among others.
Roel Burgman has been business manager at VPRO since 2013 and was temporarily general manager of VPRO for the past year and a half. Before that, Burgman held various management and board positions in the creative sector at Theater de Speeldoos, Dutch CORE, NHL Stenden, AVRO and KRO, among others.
