Zeekr Volvo EX30 – Choosing based on character within the same group

What can you choose if you want a compact EV? From no-nonsense to premium and from comfortable to sporty, you name it. Not to mention interior space or the various drive configurations. The driver seems to be the laughing third. To distinguish themselves when competing for consumer favor, car manufacturers appear to be increasingly seeking out niches. At least, to the outside world, because within the various companies we often see the same technology underneath; Differentiation is nice, but it should not cost the manufacturer (and ultimately us as consumers) too much. Whether it is a German, French or Chinese group, they all aim for maximum economies of scale. Synergy is the key word, but per brand and/or sub-segment in a unique guise. So the Volvo EX30 and the Zeekr From the point of view of economies of scale, the EX30 shares its technology with, among others, the Zeekr placed above the Swedish brand in the pecking order. However, the same scalable platform architecture and basically the same modular drive technology are used for both models. In this test we have them with a 69 kWh battery pack under the floor and a 272 hp electric motor that drives the rear wheels. When you look at the specifications, you immediately notice an important difference: the length and wheelbase of the Zeekr are 10 centimeters longer. This immediately brings us to the most shocking difference, but that does not make one car more premium than another. It seems that it is mainly the appearance and the experience that should make the difference. We’ll find out why. In this filmed double test the two cousins compete against each other. For the test in the magazine we also added a Cupra Born VZ. If you want to take the trio test, you can order AutoWeek 1 of 2025 here. We appreciate it if you would like to contribute by maintaining the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor or by writing a user review in which you share your experiences with the car. This really helps potential buyers!
