At the end of last year, Fico held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, they talked about the war in Ukraine and also gas supplies. The procedure of Fico, who took an exceptional step among representatives of Western countries with his trip to Russia, was harshly criticized by the Slovak opposition, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

“It was Fico’s obvious mistake to believe that his dark plans with Moscow would work indefinitely,” said Zelenskyiaccording to which Ukraine offered Slovakia help for the period of adaptation to stop gas transit from Russia, but “Fico arrogantly rejected it”.

Now, according to Zelensky, the Slovak prime minister is trying to shift the blame to someone else by using lies and loud accusations. But the problem is that he bet on the wrong side, the Ukrainian president thinks. “I am glad that the Prime Minister of Slovakia Fico has already returned from his vacation in a luxury hotel in Vietnam and is in Bratislava. Apparently, it is not easy for him – instead of enjoying luxury, he must now try to correct his own mistakes,” commented the Ukrainian president.

At the end of the year, when the previous contract with Russia expired, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territory, part of which was also going to Slovakia. For this, Fico threatened to stop aid to Ukraine and veto the vote in the European Union in case the situation does not change. Kyiv would consider extending the gas transit contract only if Russia was paid for the exported raw material only after the war it has been waging against Ukraine for almost three years.
