Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expresses faith that the war in his country can be ended in the coming year.
– When will the war end? When Russia wants the war to end. When the US takes a stronger position. When the global south stands on Ukraine’s side and supports an end to the war, says Zelensky.
The president expresses optimism that all the steps and decisions will be taken sooner or later.
– The road will not be easy, but I am sure that we have every chance to achieve it next year, says Zelenskyj according to the news agency Ukrinform.
He goes on to say that the Ukrainians are also open to proposals from leaders in African, Asian and Arab countries.
– I also want to hear proposals from the incoming president of the United States, and I think we will hear them in January, after which we will have a plan to end this war.
The newly elected president of the USA, Donald Trump, has previously indicated that he wants to reduce the USA’s massive military support to Ukraine.
However, Trump’s previous statement that he could end the war within 24 hours has not been mentioned recently.
Russia has now been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine for over two and a half years. So far, there have been no signs that President Vladimir Putin and his government are considering taking steps toward a quick end to the war.
Zelensky’s statement came during a meeting with foreign media in Kyiv at an international conference on food security, “Grain from Ukraine”.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces are under pressure in the eastern part of the country.
Since Friday morning, there have been 194 Russian attacks, which is a relatively high number, Ukraine’s General Staff announces.
– The enemy uses its superiority in manpower and materiel and constantly attacks our positions, it reads.
In the Donetsk region, the Russian attacks have meant that the Ukrainian forces are losing areas that they had recaptured during a summer offensive in 2023.
