Germany’s tennis star Alexander Zverev has reached the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters in Montreal after detention.
One week after his Olympic exit, the Hamburg native impressed against Dane Holger Rune and won his second match on the hard court in Canada 6:3, 7:6 (7:5).
The match, originally scheduled for Friday, was postponed by a day due to the effects of a tropical storm. Zverev was unfazed by this and took the first set after breaks to 2:1 and 6:3.
In the second round, Zverev, who celebrated his second Masters title in Montreal in 2017, initially squandered a 5-3 lead and wasted two match points when the score was 6-5. In the tiebreak, he missed three more chances to win before winning the match. Sebastian Korda (USA), who won the tournament in Washington last weekend, is waiting in the round of the last eight players.
Zverev had not felt well in some of his matches in Paris and announced after his quarter-final defeat against Italian Lorenzo Musetti that he would undergo thorough health checks before the start of the hard court season in North America. However, as was the case in the 6-1, 6-1 win against Australian Jordan Thompson, there were no physical problems to be seen.
Zverev is aiming for his first Grand Slam triumph at the US Open in New York, which begins in three weeks. In Flushing Meadows in 2020, he was only two points away from the title before losing in five sets to Dominic Thiem of Austria.
